Durango Receives Bicycle Friendly Award
In
May of 2008 the League of American Wheelmen designated Durango as a
Bicycle Friendly Community at the Silver level. This effort was put
forth by the Bicycle Friendly Task Force - a group formed by Mary
Oswald which consisted of concerned individuals, the Safe Roads
Coalition, Trails 2000 and Healthy Lifestyles La Plata Coalition, which
culminated in a Bicycle Summit that was attended by representatives
from all aspects of our community.

Safe Routes 2 School comes to Durango
The
Durango School District just received a $35,000 grant from the Colorado
Department of Transportation to make walking and biking to school
safer. The school district will use the money to educate parents,
teachers, and students; it will also be used to augment county and
district maps to include community sidewalks and bike paths.
The
Safe Roads Coalition is partnering with Healthy Lifestyle La Plata
Coalition, the Durango School District 9R, Durango Police Department,
and the City of Durango to identify priorities for future improvement
by assessing the following:
1. The existing planning, policies, and programs.
2. The physical conditions and infrastructure at and near each school.
3. The behavior of students, parents, and drivers.

Complete Streets Philosophy
A
complete street is defined as a street that works for motorists, for
bus riders, for bicyclists, and for pedestrians, including people with
disabilities. The term "complete streets" was coined in early 2003 by
bicycle advocates as a way to describe-and sell-what had until then
been referred to as "routine accommodation". The philosophy of Complete
Streets believes "bicycling and walking accommodations should be a
routine part of the department's planning, design, construction, and
operating activities."
