DATE THE SCOOP
August 2008 The Durango School District just received a $35,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation to make walking and biking to school safer. The school district will use the money to educate parents, teachers, and students; it will also be used to augment county and district maps to include community sidewalks and bike paths.

The Safe Roads Coalition is partnering with Healthy Lifestyle La Plata Coalition, the Durango School District 9R, Durango Police Department, and the City of Durango to identify priorities for future improvement by assessing the following:

1. The existing planning, policies, and programs.
2. The physical conditions and infrastructure at and near each school.

The Bicycle Friendly Task Force presents their recommendations to hire a Bike-Ped coordinator in partnership with La Plata County, the City of Durango, and other interested parties.

This effort was put forth by the Bicycle Friendly Task Force - a group formed by Mary Oswald which consisted of concerned individuals, the Safe Roads Coalition, Trails 2000 and Healthy Lifestyles La Plata Coalition, which culminated in a Bicycle Summit that was attended by representatives from all aspects of our community.
