featuring Safe Roads Coalition current events and issues
that effect your mobility within your community.

We want to keep you informed about roads issues and hope you enjoy what we have put together for your reading pleasure. If you would like to help the Safe Roads Coalition or wish to contact us about issues that you are working on please do so at the link below. We appreciate the help we have received from many volunteers and supporting companies. If you have needs that one of our supporters or supporting companies can meet, we hope you will contact them first. We wish all of you a safe journey regardless of the manner you choose to use our public rights of way. Colorado Bicycle Safety Bill Advances

Senate Bill 148 has passed the Senate and moved onto the State House of Representatives. This Bill has a number of safety aspects for cyclists on Colorado’s roadways including a safe three-foot passing distance requirement. After Bicycle Colorado’s and other significant advocacy efforts, Senators commented on the numerous comments received from people in their district on the importance of improving safety on our roads. This Bill needs your help again in the House. Click Here to read more about the bill and to find ways to show your support to ensure this important bill passes through for the Governor’s signature.

Safe Passage for Wildlife and People

Crashes between motor vehicles and wildlife are a threat to human safety and to wildlife, costing Americans more than $8 billion annually along with hundreds of lives lost. In fact, the number one cause of crashes in our CDOT region for Southwest Colorado is collisions with wildlife. To learn more about this important safety consideration click Here.


Durango Wheel Club Group Ride Plan for 2009

Last month, the Durango Wheel Club announced changes to their club sponsored group rides, which are designed to directly address growing safety and public impact concerns on our local roadways. These changes reflect the Wheel Club’s determination to minimize conflict with motorists and still enjoy their longstanding group rides for all abilities. Click Here to read the full article.

Animas River Trail Update

The Animas River Trail currently has approximately 6 miles of hard-surface trail running through the town of Durango along the Animas River, with 4.2 additional miles planned for the future. Click Here to learn how it started and what is coming up next.
