Safe Roads Coalition Fundraiser at SKA Brewery

Avery and Ska brewers are set to embark on a five day, 426 mile ride for charity, health, fun and craft-brewing brotherhood. On Sunday, July 19th 2009, 13 brewer-cyclists will depart on their bicycles from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder to kick off the first ever brewers Tour of Colorado; a six day, 426 mile journey over 9 mountain passes from Boulder to Durango. En route, these thirteen hearty souls will be stopping at microbreweries and brewpubs in an effort to bring together Colorado craft brewers and encourage the fledgling spirit of collaboration and camaraderie that has taken hold in the craft beer industry. At each stop they have selected a local roads advocacy group to donate proceeds from the public parties they will hold each night. For their arrival back home to SKA they will release the collaborative Wheel Sucker Wheat Ale, and will donate a portion of the party proceeds to the Safe Roads Coalition. We’d like your help to fill the Ska Brewery in Bodo for music, beer and fun and welcome them home, Please, support this effort to shine a bright light on the world of cycling and beer in an especially fun venue. To learn more about the rest of the tour please visit the The Full Pint website.

La Plata County Comprehensive Plan

La Plata County is working on an updated County Comprehensive Plan. This 18 month planning effort will lead to an update of 2001 La Plata County Comprehensive Plan to make sure it reflects the current needs and vision of County residents, businesses, and other stakeholders. As you know, land use planning and transportation are very closely tied together and it is essential for both that the needs of all citizens be considered as this process moves forward. We hope that you will participate in the many ways that La Plata County will make available to its citizens in this process. To learn more about the goals of this project and the many public meetings please visit the 2009 La Plata County Comprehensive Plan web site. The first work session for the visioning process is coming right up:

Envisioning our Future:
July 25th (Saturday) from 9am to 4pm
Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 North Main Avenue

An extensive Community Visioning process that will kick off the planning process, educate and inform the residents on the process, determine their values and aspirations, define common ground for the future and develop a comprehensive shared vision for the county. This meeting will set the tone for the goals that the future Comprehensive Plan will try to accomplish. This will be your chance to learn about the process and participate in setting the vision for the future of La Plata County.

More Meetings and Events

There are several up and coming roads advocacy, cycling events and public meetings in the very near future we would like to make you aware of.

National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project:

Durango will be participating in the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project. Our data will go into the national database and will serve as baseline counts to help us discern what kind of impact our future improvements to the system have on mode shift, which will effect funding, project priority and more! For more information on the methodology and the project please visit the National Bicycle & Pedestrian Documentation Project website.

Durango Multi-Modal Transportation Coordinator needs your help to conduct Bike/Ped Counts.

The counts will take place on September 8-10, 12 & 13.  There are 7-8 locations and will need volunteers for each location for 2-hour shifts although volunteers may do more than one shift.  That’s a bunch of Volunteers!

What the volunteers will need to:
1. Attend a training session (approximately 40 minutes).  Amber will host at least 3 sessions.
2. Volunteer for at least one 2 hour block of time.
3. Attend the Celebratory Party in their honor (plans are in the works)

A doodle account has been set up for volunteers to register for times they are available for training and counting:

The City of Durango and the Multi Modal coordinator want to know, do you like to wear red?  Do you like to ride a bike? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then join the bike procession for the grand opening of the Durango Intermodal Transit Center! They are organizing a bike procession from Buckley Park to the opening ceremonies for the Transit Center, on August 14th.

Meet at Buckley Park at 9:30 am, to leave at 9:45 obeying all traffic laws, and wearing red shirts if possible (DWC and this year’s Bouré jerseys are perfect!) and head to the Transit Center where if they can find 2 volunteers we will have a Bike Valet.  There will be small ceremony and ribbon cutting then we will have refreshments, tours of the LEED certified Transit Center, and so much more. For additional information please contact amber Blake, 970-375-4949 or BlakeAK@ci.durango.co.us

The 3rd annual Tour de Farms will take place Sunday, Aug 31.  There will be 2 rides to choose from - one geared for families (approx 5 mile relatively flat course) that will tour the city of Durango urban and backyard gardens; and a longer, 20 mile ride in and around Ignacio that will tour Fox Fire Farms and La Boca.  There will be an all local foods BBQ lunch, local beer and root beer from Carver's, music and prizes after the rides at the Smiley building backyard. Registration will be available at the Healthy Lifestyle La Plata website after August 1.

Healthy Lifestyle La Plata (HLLP) will be sponsoring a PLACE (planning active community environments) training on Friday, October 23. Anyone interested in helping create and plan communities that encourage and support active transportation options, especially biking, should attend this workshop. This will be a follow up to Dan Burden's Healthy Communities workshops (Jun 09) that presented solutions to automobile-centric infrastructure and roads. Presented by Colorado Physical Activity & Nutrition Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment and the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute, and sponsored by HLLP.  Registration will be available at Healthy Lifestyle La Plata website in mid-September.
